There’s no-one awake when Steve heads out for his morning run. He isn’t surprised because that’s the way it usually is. He’ll run for an hour or so and then, when he gets back, someone will be there –maybe Clint, maybe Natasha, definitely notTony – and the day will start properly. It’s a routine he’s comfortable with, one that helps him focus and get ready for whatever challenges – and there are always challenges – are ahead of him.

Sometimes, though, even working off energy in his morning run isn’t enough.

When he arrives back at the house, everyone is awake and looking stressed. He’s half-way towards getting his suit and shield when Bruce lays a hand on his arm and quietly tells him that it’s not that sort of an emergency.

“What’s happened, then?” He asks, already looking around to try and work out what the problem is.

Bruce looks down at the floor for a moment and then points towards the kitchen table. “The latest front page headline happened.”

One glance is all it takes for Steve to become the most stressed out person in the room. There’s a photo of him with Tony, a suggestive headline and, yeah, they’re going to have a problem because the press have made assumptions about an issue that none of them – definitely not Tony and definitely not Steve – have had the guts to talk about yet. It explains why, across the other side of the room, Tony is hiding behind his coffee and Steve has to fight the instinct to go over and talk to him because it’s not the time, not when everyone is there and not when he has to go and phone SHIELD.

“It’s not that bad.” He tries to reassure them all but, from the way they look at him, he mustn’t have sounded that convincing. “Okay, in a fair world, it wouldn’t be that bad.”

“They were just starting to give up on gossiping about us.” Natasha points out, although there’s a hint of amusement in her voice. “Now the spotlight is back and they’re going to start all over again.”

“Well, they’ll just have to gossip.” Steve glances once more at Tony before heading out of the door. He doesn’t stop walking until he’s outside again; it’s raining now but he needs the air, because that front page headline had actually, for speculation, been pretty close to accurate. There is something going on between him and Tony, the only difference between the headline and reality was that they hadn’t admitted it yet.

There are calls he needs to make but, for a moment, he needs to keep walking, needs a few moments to think. He doesn’t get far, though, before he hears shouting from behind and he turns to see Tony following behind. There’s a small, cowardly part of him that wants to run, wants to avoid this moment because he knows it’s going to be make or break for the two of them and he wants so much for it to be make that, if it goes the other way, he’s not sure how he’ll react. But running would be childish and running wouldn’t be fair to Tony or to himself and there’s a much bigger part of him that wants this now. After the months of circling around each other, flirting and getting to know one another, he wants this to happen.

He waits. Tony slows slightly as he draws nearer, looking Steve up and down as though he’s trying to work out how this is going to go. Unlike him, Tony’s also, Steve notices, remembered to put up a coat so he won’t get soaked through.

“It’s raining,” is the first thing Tony stays when he’s standing level with Steve.

Steve nods. “We’re on the front page.”

“We are.” Tony takes a step closer, goes to reach for Steve’s arm but falters and let’s his own arm drop back to his side. “People seem to think we’re dating.”

And Steve can’t be reading that action wrong, he’s definitely not mishearing the slight flirtation and the slight nervousness in Tony’s voice. And it isn’t impulsive to close the gap, not really, not when they’ve been moving towards this for a long time, but it feels impulsive as his lips touch Tony’s.

They kiss for a long time, slow and easy like they’re both just soaking up the moment and it doesn’t matter that Steve’s t-shirt is sticking to his skin because of the rain – in fact, it’s something Tony will probably appreciate later – and it doesn’t matter that they have to deal with the press when they head back inside because this, right here, is them. It’s them, kissing in the rain, and Steve doesn’t want anything else.
