The bar was packed to the brim with people out enjoying their Friday nights; businessmen, actors and cashiers all rubbing shoulders, sharing one common goal: to get drunk and have a good time. Bodies jostled against one another and the heat in the building was almost suffocating. It wasn’t like it was unfamiliar to Jensen – he had lived in the area long enough to know the score – but the closeness, the fine line between being drunk and being out of control, still left him feeling uneasy.
He tossed back a shot, hoping it would calm him down, and glanced around the room to try and spot Jeff. With Supernatural’s filming schedule and Jeff’s own acting responsibilities, it had been getting harder and harder to spend time together and this, coming out for drinks with the crew after work, wasn’t ideal but they hadn’t been able to turn the offer down. He hadn’t minded at the time; Jeff enjoyed this sort of thing, liked socialising even if it was in a noisy bar filled with people, but he hadn’t seen Jeff all night and it wasn’t fair.
Sighing, Jensen closed his eyes, pressing the cool shot glass against his forehead. He knew Jeff, knew that Jeff knew him, which meant that they would be heading home soon.
“I’ll have another beer, please.” He nodded towards the bartender and pulled his phone out of his jacket, smiled when he saw the text from Jeff telling him that he would be over as soon as he managed to lose the pushy casting manager that was talking to him.
Someone bumped into him from behind and he shifted slightly, eyes fixed straight ahead as he felt someone lean next to him at the bar, felt an arm brush his own. The guy’s aftershave was strong, didn’t smell attractive at all, and he checked his phone again to give himself something to do.
“You too good to say hello?”
He glanced up, bit back a curse when he saw he was surrounded; three men, two of them taller than he was, and he should have been paying more attention.
The man standing behind him spoke, “Maybe he thinks he’s too pretty.”
Shaking his head, Jensen answered, “No – I’m just not interested, okay? I – I’m with someone.”
One of the guys – shoulder-length hair, crooked smile – laughed, “Well, where’s this someone now? If you were mine, baby, I wouldn’t leave you alone for one second.”
He straightened up, “It’s a good job I’m not yours, then. Pushy assholes aren’t really my thing.” He swallowed as a hand closed around his bicep, tried to pull away but stumbled into a barstool.
“Clumsy little thing, aren’t you.”
And that was enough; he wasn’t going to stick around any longer. “I’m leaving now, out of my way.”
Crooked smile smirked, “I don’t think you get it, baby, you’re either going to play nice or-”
“Or what?”
Jensen spun around, sighing in relief when he saw Jeff. They might still be outnumbered three to two but this was Jeff – strong, safe, dependable Jeff; he wasn’t going to let anything happen to them.
“Keep out of this, man. This is none of your business.”
“This is totally my business.”
Jensen shivered; the sound that was coming from Jeff’s mouth wasn’t his usual good-natured tone, it was low, rough and dangerous and if the men had had any sense they would have moved away immediately.
“Not anymore.”
It was the one behind Jensen that spoke, hot air hitting the back of his neck and Jensen would have stepped forwards but there was another guy right there so, instead, he looked over at Jeff. “Are we going home now?”
“You’re not going anywhere, baby.”
And then there was a hand on his arm, fingers digging into his shoulder and it was too personal, too close.
Jeff surged forwards, pushing the guy up against the bar before meeting his eyes, “I’m just going to make one thing clear. He,” he pointed towards Jensen, “Is off limits. In fact, he’s so far off limits that scum like you shouldn’t even be looking at him, never mind talking to him – harassing him – so you all go back to doing whatever crap you do and leave him the hell alone.” He gave the guy another shove and then stepped back.
There was no answer but Jensen could feel the other two men step away and he finished the job for them, pushing his way out of the group to stand beside Jeff. He didn’t look at the men again, just slid his hand into Jeff’s as they headed out of the bar.
Outside, the air was cold and Jensen stopped walking for a moment to let it wash over him, and then turned to look at Jeff. “Thanks.”
Shaking his head, Jeff pulled Jensen closer, rested his hands on his hips, “They were jerks. You okay?” He pressed a kiss against Jensen’s jaw, breath ghosting over his lips as he pulled away.
Jensen chased Jeff’s lips with his own and then pulled back again, shrugging, “You’re here. I’ll be fine.”
